Igor Shesterkin Is Hurt and Dylan Garand Takes the Rangers Net Against Vancouver

Igor Shesterkin left the Rangers' 3-1 loss in Washington on Friday night with a lower-body injury, and he did not leave on his own power. Early in the second period his right skate caught the post as he scrambled back to his crease, his leg buckled underneath him, and teammates helped him off the ice without him putting any weight on the right leg. Coach Mike Sullivan told reporters afterward that he did not have an update and described the situation as concerning.

Dylan Garand finished the game, stopping 11 of 12 shots in his first career relief appearance. The one that beat him was Boone Jenner's tiebreaker at 17:38 of the second, Jenner's first goal as a Capital, after he jumped on a loose puck in the Rangers' end. Tom Wilson and Timothy Liljegren also scored for Washington, Alexis Lafreniere scored for New York, and Logan Thompson made 21 saves for the win.

What the Rangers Know, and What They Do Not

As of Saturday there is no diagnosis and no timeline. RotoWire initially carried Shesterkin as day-to-day, but the manner of the exit (no weight on the leg, helped down the tunnel) is the kind of image that usually precedes an IR placement rather than a quick return. Until the Rangers announce something, fantasy managers and bettors should treat him as unavailable for Sunday's home game against Vancouver and plan around a multi-game absence.

That matters because Shesterkin had been sharp to open the year. Per early-season reporting, he had allowed fewer than two goals per game across his first four starts with a save percentage in the low .920s, which is exactly the profile the Rangers need while their skaters find their footing under Sullivan.

The bigger problem is depth. New York has already been squeezed in goal this month: Joonas Korpisalo went on injured reserve with a lower-body injury earlier in October, which is why Garand was recalled from Hartford in the first place, and Hartford's veteran Spencer Martin is also out with a lower-body injury. That leaves the organization very thin on healthy goalies with NHL contracts.

Garand's Second Chance at the Crease

Garand's path to this spot has been unusual. The Rangers waived him in late September, he cleared and was sent to Hartford, and then he was back in New York by Oct. 1 after the Korpisalo injury. In his first start he shut out Detroit 2-0 on the road with 22 saves. Friday's relief work, one goal on 12 shots in a tied game, did nothing to hurt his case.

The issue for fantasy purposes is not his recent form, it is the sample. Garand has only a handful of NHL appearances, so his save percentage will swing hard from start to start. What he does have is volume: if Shesterkin misses meaningful time, Garand is the only healthy goalie on the NHL roster with any track record, and he should get the large majority of starts until the Rangers either get healthy or add a goalie from outside.

Callum Tung is the most likely recall to back him up. Tung has yet to make his NHL debut and has only about 20 AHL games on his resume, but he posted a 28-save shutout for Hartford in a 2-0 win over Providence on Friday. Multiple Rangers outlets expect him to be called up before Sunday if Shesterkin is ruled out. If New York opts to look outside the organization for a veteran instead, that changes the calculus quickly, so watch the transaction wire.

Fantasy Fallout

Garand is an immediate add in any league that rosters two goalies per team or plays daily goalies. He is the projected starter on a team that typically scores enough to give him win chances, and goalie starts are the scarcest commodity in fantasy hockey this early in the season. In shallow 10 or 12-team leagues, he is a strong streaming option for Sunday and a speculative hold for the week.

Shesterkin managers should not panic-drop. No diagnosis has been released, and dropping an elite goalie on visuals alone is how leagues get won by the manager who picks him up. If your league has an IR slot, hold him there once the Rangers designate him. If it does not, wait for the official update before making a cut.

The skater side shifts too. A Rangers team playing a young, unproven goalie behind it may lean more conservative in its own end, which can trim the rush chances that fuel its forwards. That is a marginal effect, but it is worth noting for managers who were counting on Lafreniere and the top six to keep rolling at the pace they set during the early-season win streak. Lafreniere scored again Friday, so his role on the top unit is intact.

On the other side, opposing shooters gain value. Vancouver comes to Madison Square Garden on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET, the second half of a weekend back-to-back after a Saturday matinee in New Jersey. The Canucks lost 7-2 in Carolina on Thursday and have leaned heavily on Elias Pettersson for offense, but any skater facing a backup or a debuting goalie gets a bump in DFS and in streaming decisions.

The Betting Angle

The Shesterkin injury is the single biggest goalie-driven line mover of the young season. With Shesterkin in net, the Rangers would typically be priced as clear home favorites against a road team on the second night of a back-to-back. With Garand, the price should tighten, and the total is the more interesting market: a young goalie behind a team still adjusting to a new system, against a Canucks club that has given up goals in bunches, points toward an over lean if the posted number does not adjust enough.

Bettors should wait for confirmation. Daily Faceoff's starting goalie page is the best real-time source, and the line will move again the moment New York names a starter. Fatigue cuts the other way for Vancouver, which will be playing its second game in two days, and that may keep the Rangers favored even with Garand.

What's Next

The Rangers are expected to provide an update on Shesterkin before Sunday's game. The three things to watch are whether he is placed on injured reserve (which would confirm a multi-game absence), whether Tung or an outside goalie is added, and whether Garand is named the Sunday starter at the morning skate.

For fantasy managers, the action item is simple: add Garand now, before the official word drives his roster percentage up, and hold Shesterkin until there is a real diagnosis. For bettors, avoid locking in any Rangers moneyline or total until the starter is confirmed, then shop the number, because books may be slow to fully price a goalie who has started only a couple of NHL games.
