DJ Moore Misses Thursday Practice With His Shoulder and Keon Coleman Is the Monday Night Pivot Against the Rams
By Verdexed NFL Desk

DJ Moore did not practice Thursday because of the left shoulder injury he reaggravated in Week 4, and his status for the Buffalo Bills' Monday night game against the Los Angeles Rams is now genuinely uncertain. Head coach Joe Brady did not rule him out, saying the team would let Moore play if Moore believes he can perform at a high level, but one fantasy analyst characterized him as on the doubtful side of questionable with Friday and Saturday practices still to come. For fantasy managers, Moore's status decides whether Keon Coleman and Khalil Shakir are Week 5 starters. For bettors, it is a variable in one of the highest totals on the board.
The Bills visit SoFi Stadium on Monday, October 12, at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN. Because it is the final game of the week, Moore's status will drive a lot of late-week roster decisions, especially for managers who need a Monday night fill-in.
How Moore got here
Moore first hurt his left shoulder against Detroit in Week 2 and landed on it again in the 29-26 loss to New England in Week 4, leaving in the first half. Reports have described the injury as an AC joint sprain rather than anything structural, and ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday night that it was not considered a long-term issue. That framing has not changed. What has changed is the practice pattern: no on-field work to open the week, followed by another missed session Thursday.
Brady's comments leave the decision partly with the player. That is typical for a shoulder sprain, where the question is pain tolerance and range of motion rather than a structural risk, and it means Moore's status could stay unresolved until the Bills' final report on Saturday.
The rest of the report
Moore was not the only Bills absence Thursday. Defensive tackle Ed Oliver (knee) and cornerback Dee Alford (ankle) also missed practice, while cornerback Christian Benford and defensive lineman Landon Jackson were limited. Brady indicated he does not expect the Oliver and Alford injuries to be long-term issues.
| Player | Team | Injury | Thursday practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| DJ Moore | BUF | Shoulder | Did not practice |
| Ed Oliver | BUF | Knee | Did not practice |
| Dee Alford | BUF | Ankle | Did not practice |
| Christian Benford | BUF | Toe/ankle (reports differ) | Limited |
| Landon Jackson | BUF | Not specified | Limited |
| Davante Adams | LAR | Veteran rest | Did not practice |
On the Rams' side, Davante Adams sat Thursday for a veteran rest day, which is not a concern. Several Rams defenders were also held out, including safety Quentin Lake and linebacker Nate Landman, and cornerback Jaylen Watson was limited as he returns from a dislocated shoulder.
Fantasy fallout
Keon Coleman: start him as a WR3 if Moore sits. Coleman was the clear winner after Moore left in Week 4, catching six of seven targets for 116 yards and a 34-yard touchdown, the third 100-yard game of his career. He is the Bills' best outside option without Moore, and Buffalo has no other receiver with that profile. If Moore plays at less than full strength, Coleman remains a reasonable flex.
Khalil Shakir: steady PPR flex either way. Shakir led the team in targets against New England and finished with seven catches for 82 yards, though he also lost a fumble. His role in the slot is stable regardless of Moore's status, and he becomes a firmer WR3 in full-PPR formats if Moore is out.
Dalton Kincaid: modest bump. Fewer targets go to a banged-up receiver room, which helps the tight end. Kincaid has been inconsistent, but Monday is a good spot to stream him if your usual tight end has a tough matchup.
DJ Moore: do not start him if he is listed as questionable without practicing Friday. A Monday game means you will not learn about inactives until late in the week's slate. Unless you can pivot to another Monday player, a questionable Moore is not worth the zero risk. If he practices fully Friday or Saturday, he returns to WR3 territory.
Josh Allen: start him. Allen had a turnover-heavy night against New England, but the volume and the rushing floor keep him an elite fantasy option regardless of who is catching passes.
Betting angle
The market has the Rams as short home favorites. One sportsbook listing had Los Angeles at minus 2.5, while prediction markets showed the Rams at about 3.5, and both had the total at 54.5. That is a high number, and it assumes both offenses have their weapons.
Moore's absence would matter more to the total than to the side. Buffalo can still move the ball with Allen, Shakir and Coleman, but losing its most experienced outside receiver reduces big-play potential. If Moore is ruled out, we would lean under 54.5. If he is cleared fully, we see this as a close game in which Buffalo, an underdog for the first time this season, has value on the moneyline. On props, Coleman's receiving yardage line is the one to watch: books may set it before Moore's status is clear and adjust only partially.

The Verdexed take
We expect Moore to be a true game-time decision for Monday, with a realistic chance he is held out. A non-structural shoulder sprain can be managed, but a reaggravation in Week 4 followed by a missed Thursday suggests he is not close to full. The safest approach for fantasy managers is to treat Moore as out for lineup purposes unless he practices Friday, and to roster Coleman wherever possible as the Monday night pivot.
What's next
The Bills practice Friday and Saturday, with game designations expected Saturday. A limited session Friday would signal Moore has a chance; another missed day would make him doubtful. If he is ruled out, Coleman becomes a strong waiver claim for the rest of the season as Moore's shoulder could linger beyond this week.
