Connor Hellebuyck Wins His Devils Debut as Nico Hischier Scores Twice in a 5-1 Rout of the Stars: The Fantasy Read
By Verdexed NHL Desk

Connor Hellebuyck's first game as a New Jersey Devil looked a lot like the Hellebuyck fantasy managers remember. Four days after Winnipeg traded him to New Jersey, the three-time Vezina Trophy winner allowed one goal on a light workload as the Devils beat the Dallas Stars 5-1 on Tuesday night. Outlets credited him with 16 or 17 saves; either way, it was a comfortable win and his first since April 9.
Nico Hischier scored twice, Jack Hughes, Luke Hughes and Jesper Boqvist added goals, and New Jersey moved to 8-4-0 with its fourth straight win. Dallas, which had won five in a row, got its only goal from Justin Hryckowian.
How the game unfolded
Hischier set the tone early, finishing a 2-on-1 rush with Timo Meier at 2:41 of the first period, then scored again 38 seconds into the second period to make it 2-0. From there the Devils controlled the game, and the Stars rarely tested Hellebuyck with sustained pressure.
That light workload is worth noting. A goalie returning from a long layoff could hardly ask for a gentler reintroduction: a big lead, limited shots, and a team in front of him that kept play in the offensive zone. It also means fantasy managers should not over-read the save total. The bigger takeaway is that he looked comfortable and that New Jersey's structure limited high-danger chances.
The trade and the layoff
Hellebuyck had not played an NHL game since April. He refused to report to training camp and was suspended without pay, and Winnipeg ultimately granted his trade request last Friday. The Devils sent forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goalie Nico Daws, the rights to prospect Alexander Command, a 2029 second-round pick and a seventh-round pick to the Jets.
New Jersey takes on a 33-year-old goalie with five seasons left on a contract that carries an $8.5 million average annual value. The Devils are betting that their Stanley Cup window is now and that elite goaltending was the missing piece.
The deal at a glance:
| Asset | Moves to |
|---|---|
| G Connor Hellebuyck | Devils |
| F Dawson Mercer | Jets |
| F Nick Bjugstad | Jets |
| G Nico Daws | Jets |
| Rights to Alexander Command | Jets |
| 2029 2nd and a 7th-round pick | Jets |
Fantasy fallout: Hellebuyck
Hellebuyck is back to being an elite fantasy goalie. The Devils are a strong possession team with a deep forward group led by Jack Hughes and Hischier, which means more wins and fewer shots against than he saw in many Winnipeg seasons. The trade-off is that fewer shots can mean fewer saves in points formats that reward them; wins and save percentage are where he will do most of his damage.
The one caveat is conditioning. Goalies coming off long layoffs sometimes need a few starts to find their timing, and New Jersey may manage his workload early, particularly on back-to-backs. Expect him to start the majority of games, but do not assume a 65-start pace immediately.
Verdict: Start him every time he is confirmed. If you drafted around his holdout, he is a top-tier goalie again.
Fantasy fallout: Jake Allen
Allen was set to be New Jersey's starter before the trade, and he had gone 4-2 with an .883 save percentage. He now moves to a backup role. In most leagues he becomes a drop, or at best a spot starter on back-to-backs when Hellebuyck rests. If you were streaming Allen, it is time to move on.
What it means for Winnipeg
On the other side of the trade, Mercer has a new opportunity in Winnipeg, and his role there is the key fantasy question for the Jets. He was already featured in Verdexed's weekly streamer coverage this week. Winnipeg's goaltending is the bigger concern for Jets managers and for bettors, because the team must now replace a goalie who has driven its results for years.
The Devils' skaters
Hellebuyck's arrival also lifts the fantasy outlook for New Jersey's skaters, mostly through plus-minus and game state. Teams with elite goaltending play with more leads, and leads mean more power plays drawn, more empty-net chances and fewer games spent chasing. Hischier, Meier and the Hughes brothers were already strong starts; the trade makes them more reliable.
Betting angle
The Devils were already playing well before Hellebuyck arrived, and adding him lifts the floor on every game they play. The market will adjust Devils lines when he is confirmed as the starter, so the value tends to be in games where his start is confirmed late. Check Daily Faceoff or team announcements on game day before betting Devils moneylines or game totals.
On the Dallas side, one blowout loss does not erase a five-game winning streak, but it is a reminder that the Stars can be held down by elite goaltending.

What's next
The Devils' next few games will tell us how New Jersey plans to split the net. If Hellebuyck starts on consecutive nights, that is a sign the team believes his conditioning is fine. For fantasy managers, the plan is simple: start Hellebuyck, drop or bench Allen, and buy into the Devils' skaters, who should benefit from fewer goals against and more favorable game states.
