Connor Bedard Plays 21 Minutes in His Return, and the Blackhawks Center Is a Buy-Low Fantasy Target Right Now

Connor Bedard is back, and the Chicago Blackhawks did not ease him in. In his season debut Tuesday night, weeks ahead of the original timeline after surgery on his left shoulder on July 8, Bedard skated more than 21 minutes, recorded an assist and put three shots on goal in a 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Teuvo Teravainen and Roman Kantserov each scored twice for Chicago, and Sidney Crosby scored twice for Pittsburgh in a losing effort.

Head coach Jeff Blashill praised Bedard's play after the long layoff. The workload is the headline for fantasy managers: a player still being protected does not log 21 minutes in his first game back. Bedard went 6-for-14 on faceoffs, which is what you would expect from a center who has not taken a live draw in months.

Why the minutes matter

Bedard's shoulder surgery in July put his start to the season in doubt, and the original recovery timeline pointed to a later return. He was cleared for full contact last week and the Blackhawks made the call to return him against Pittsburgh.

Twenty-one minutes is a top-line workload. It tells you Blashill views Bedard as fully ready, not as a player who needs a ramp-up. For fantasy purposes, ice time is the single best predictor of production, and Bedard's first-game number is right where it was at his best.

The supporting cast is better

Chicago's offense around Bedard looks more dangerous than it did a year ago. Kantserov, a rookie, scored twice in Bedard's return and has been one of the early-season surprises. Teravainen gives Chicago a veteran playmaking winger who fits naturally alongside Bedard.

That supporting cast matters because Bedard's assist totals have been capped in past seasons by a lack of finishing talent around him. If Kantserov and Teravainen continue to convert, Bedard's point production should climb.

Fantasy outlook

If you have Bedard: Start him every night. He is back to a full workload, and his ice time and shot volume make him a weekly start in all formats.

If you do not: This is a buy-low window. Some managers who drafted him late as an injury stash may still undervalue him after a one-point debut. Offer a fair trade for a center or winger who has started hot but lacks Bedard's underlying role and shot volume.

Roman Kantserov: He has already been a popular waiver add after his early-season scoring, and playing alongside a healthy Bedard would only help. In deeper leagues, he is worth holding.

Betting angle

A healthy Bedard changes how the market should price Chicago. The Blackhawks without him were an easy fade; with him playing top-line minutes and a supporting cast that can finish, Chicago's offense deserves a step up in respect. Shot props are the clearest angle, because his three shots in a limited-rust return suggest his usual shot volume is coming back quickly.

Health watch

Shoulder surgeries can flare up with heavy contact, and Bedard plays a style that invites physical attention. The Blackhawks will likely monitor his workload on back-to-backs, and fantasy managers in daily-lineup leagues should check morning skate reports before games in which Chicago is on the second night of a back-to-back.

What's next

Bedard's next few games will confirm whether the workload holds and whether his chemistry with Kantserov and Teravainen sticks. If he stays above 20 minutes a night, he goes back into the conversation as a top-tier fantasy center. The window to buy him at a discount is short, and it closes with his first multi-point night.
