Breece Hall Is Out Again and Braelon Allen Leads the Jets Backfield Against Cleveland
By Verdexed NFL Desk

Breece Hall will miss a second straight game. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Friday that Hall's quadriceps injury will keep him out of Sunday's Week 5 home game against the Cleveland Browns, and he remains week to week. Braelon Allen is set to lead New York's backfield again, with Isaiah Davis and Kene Nwangwu behind him.
Hall was not the only Jets starter ruled out. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell (finger), left guard Dylan Parham (knee) and linebacker Francisco Mauigoa (quad) will also sit. There was one piece of good news for the offense: Glenn said tight end Mason Taylor (thumb) is expected to return.
How Hall Got Here
Hall was hurt early in the fourth quarter of the Week 3 loss to Detroit, a 31-24 defeat, when he was pushed out of bounds and came up clutching his right thigh. An MRI showed a quad injury that was described as less serious than first feared, but the early timeline already pointed to at least one missed game and possibly more. That is how it has played out.
Through three games, Hall had 163 rushing yards and 102 receiving yards, a usage profile that made him a weekly RB2 with RB1 weeks in PPR formats. He signed a three-year extension in the offseason after the Jets first used the franchise tag on him, so New York has every reason to be patient with a soft-tissue injury rather than rush him back on a 1-3 team.
His next chance to play is Week 6 against New England.
Allen's Week 4 Workload Is the Template
The best guide to Sunday is what happened last week in Chicago. With Hall out, Allen took every running back carry in the 23-12 loss to the Bears, finishing with 14 carries for 59 yards and catching both of his targets for eight yards. He played nearly every offensive snap. Davis, who had been used primarily on special teams, did not get a carry.
That is a bell-cow share, and share is what drives running back fantasy value. The problem is the surrounding offense. Chicago controlled the clock behind a 30-carry day from Kyle Monangai, the Jets were flagged 12 times, and quarterback Geno Smith completed just 8 of 15 passes for 119 yards. Allen's 14 carries were a function of total team volume, not a lack of trust.
| Player | Team | Injury | Week 5 Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breece Hall | Jets | Quad | Out |
| Adonai Mitchell | Jets | Finger | Out |
| Dylan Parham | Jets | Knee | Out |
| Francisco Mauigoa | Jets | Quad | Out |
| Mason Taylor | Jets | Thumb | Expected to play |
| Mason Graham | Browns | Knee/ankle | Out |
| Teven Jenkins | Browns | Back | Out |
| Tylan Wallace | Browns | Knee | Out |
Fantasy Fallout
Braelon Allen is a volume RB2 this week. A near-complete share of the backfield in a game the Jets are favored to win is a strong starting point, and the Browns will be without defensive tackle Mason Graham (knee/ankle), a meaningful loss for their interior run defense. Allen's size makes him the favorite for any goal-line carries, which is where his upside lives. The risk is game script and offensive efficiency: if New York stalls the way it did in Chicago, the ceiling caps out around the Week 4 line.
Isaiah Davis is not a recommended pickup in standard leagues. Last week's usage showed the Jets do not view this as a committee, and he would need an in-game injury to Allen to matter. In very deep leagues, he is the handcuff to Allen's handcuff.
Mason Taylor's expected return gives Geno Smith a reliable short-area target and may slightly cap the target share of fellow tight end Kenyon Sadiq, who had emerged while Taylor was out. With Mitchell sidelined, the Jets' remaining receivers absorb his downfield looks, and Isaiah Williams, who caught a 58-yard touchdown in Chicago, has a path to more snaps as a deep-league dart.
On the other side, the Browns lose wide receiver Tylan Wallace and offensive lineman Teven Jenkins. Cleveland is 3-1 behind Deshaun Watson, and the Jets defense forced two turnovers against Chicago last week, so the Jets D/ST is a playable streamer in a low-total game.
The Betting Angle
This is one of the lowest totals on the Week 5 board. Books have it between 39.5 and 40.5, with the Jets favored by 1.5 to 2.5 points depending on the shop and around -130 on the moneyline. Hall's absence was largely expected by the time the line settled, since he had been ruled week to week since Week 3, so the number did not need to absorb a surprise.
The angle for bettors is the matchup between a Jets run game led by Allen and a Browns front missing Graham. Allen's rushing yardage prop and the game total are the markets most directly tied to Friday's news. A run-heavy, clock-controlling script from the home team typically suppresses scoring, which aligns with how this total is priced. Bettors should also note that the Browns have won three straight, so the Jets being favored at 1-3 speaks to how the market views each roster at full strength.

What's Next
Hall's return window opens in Week 6 against the Patriots. The first tell will be his practice participation on Wednesday and Thursday. A limited session early in the week would suggest he is on track; another full week of absences would push his timeline further and extend Allen's run as the lead back.
For fantasy managers holding Hall, there is no reason to panic. The initial MRI was described as less serious than feared, and his role should be secure once healthy. For Allen managers, this week is the window to cash in his volume, and his value as a high-end handcuff remains intact even after Hall returns.
Sunday's kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium. Confirm Allen's active status and Taylor's availability when inactives are released 90 minutes before the game.
