Brady Tkachuk Debuts on Barkov's Line as Florida Opens at Carolina Without Brad Marchand

Brady Tkachuk will make his Florida Panthers debut on the top line tonight alongside Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart, and he will share the top power-play unit with his brother Matthew, when the Panthers open the 2026-27 season at 5 p.m. ET in Carolina. The Hurricanes raise their championship banner before puck drop. Florida will play without Brad Marchand, who is on injured reserve after August surgery and will continue rehabbing through at least the end of October, according to head coach Paul Maurice.

For fantasy managers, this game is the first look at a Florida lineup that was rebuilt around two major additions: Brady Tkachuk by trade and Barkov by recovery.

The Brady Tkachuk era begins

Florida acquired Tkachuk from Ottawa on June 21 for a package built around draft picks: two first-round picks in the 2026 draft, a 2029 first-rounder and a 2027 second-rounder. The trade reunited him with Matthew on a team that won two Stanley Cups before missing the playoffs last season.

Tkachuk left a preseason game early with what Maurice described as minor tightness, but he was back practicing on the top line and has been confirmed for tonight. His role is as good as it gets for fantasy: first-line minutes with the best two-way center in the league and a top power-play spot next to his brother.

In Ottawa, Tkachuk was a volume shooter and a hits machine, one of the rare players who produces in every category that multi-category fantasy leagues reward. That profile should translate directly, and the quality of his linemates is a clear upgrade.

Barkov is back

Barkov missed the entire 2025-26 season after tearing his ACL and MCL in his right knee during training camp. His absence was a primary reason Florida's season derailed. He is healthy for the opener and centering the top line.

For fantasy, Barkov is a strong buy if he has slipped on draft boards because of the injury. His defensive value does not show up in most fantasy formats, but his playmaking does, and centering Tkachuk and Reinhart gives him elite linemates. The only question is whether the knee holds up over a full season, and the Panthers will likely manage him carefully on back-to-backs.

The rest of the Florida lineup

Maurice's projected lines put Carter Verhaeghe, Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk on the second line, with Eetu Luostarinen, Anton Lundell and Sandis Vilmanis on the third. That depth is a big reason Florida is viewed as a contender again. The second line is strong enough to be a first line on many teams, and Matthew Tkachuk's power-play role keeps his fantasy ceiling intact even while playing on the second unit at five-on-five.

In goal, Jacob Markstrom gets the start. Florida brought him in to replace Sergei Bobrovsky, who has moved on to Toronto. Markstrom is a solid starter, and the Panthers' structure should help his numbers.

Marchand's absence is felt most on the power play and in the top-nine depth. His return, no earlier than November on the current timeline, will add another scorer, but for now, fantasy managers can leave him on injured reserve slots.

The Carolina side

The defending champions have their own changes. Goaltender Frederik Andersen signed with Edmonton, and defenseman Alexander Nikishin remains an unsigned restricted free agent. Pyotr Kochetkov and Brandon Bussi will share the net, and the Verdexed feed projects Bussi to start tonight. Seth Jarvis is also listed out for the opener.

Carolina's system remains among the league's most effective at driving shot volume, and that is a big part of why the model likes them at home tonight.

For DFS players, the Carolina side is harder to trust tonight. With Jarvis out and a goaltending tandem still sorting out its pecking order, the Hurricanes' stack options are thinner than usual, and the Florida top line is the more reliable place to spend salary on a five-game slate.

The Verdexed model take

The model makes Carolina a 52% favorite against a market price of about 54%, with the puck line at Carolina -1.5 and a total of 6.5. That is essentially a coin flip, and the model's number is close enough to the market that there is no strong side play.

The model's case for Carolina is built on venue, worth about 7.4 points of edge, shot share, worth about 6.0, and power play, worth about 2.8. The case against is shot margin, where Florida has a slight edge. The model is effectively saying that home ice and Carolina's system roughly offset Florida's upgraded roster.

The more interesting angle is on player props. The model projects Brady Tkachuk for 3.5 shots on goal, with the over a play at 2.5 or lower. That fits his profile as a high-volume shooter, and his first game with new linemates on the top unit gives him plenty of opportunity. On the Carolina side, the model projects Andrei Svechnikov for 3.1 shots and Sebastian Aho for 3.0, both with the over a play at 2.5.

What to watch

The Tkachuk-Barkov-Reinhart line is the storyline to follow, both for fantasy and for Florida's ceiling this season. If that trio clicks immediately, the Panthers become one of the favorites in the East. The Tkachuk brothers on the same power-play unit is also a unique situation, and watching how Florida distributes shots between them will be informative.

For fantasy managers, start both Tkachuks and Barkov with confidence. For bettors, the side is a coin flip, but Brady Tkachuk's shot prop is the clearest edge on the board tonight.
