MLB Today's Best Bets (September 4): No Model Board as Sale Faces Sanchez in Philadelphia
By Verdexed Analytics
Friday's board opens on a division race. The Atlanta Braves, 83-57, visit the Philadelphia Phillies, 79-61, for the first of four games at Citizens Bank Park, with Atlanta holding a four-game lead in the National League East and Chris Sale listed opposite Cristopher Sanchez. This column exists to set Verdexed's model probability beside the market's price, strip the sportsbook's margin out, and report the gap. Friday extends a run of days when that has not been possible. The verdexed.com prediction, edge, and accuracy surfaces are unreachable from this publishing environment, and per-game win probabilities, confidence tiers, and edge figures were not retrievable through search either. So there is no biggest edge to name today, nothing below is called an edge, and no probability below is attributed to the model. What follows is the market's read alone, labeled as such throughout, published as information and entertainment rather than betting advice, for a reader 21 or older located where sports wagering is legal.
How to read this
A normal edition carries two numbers per game. The first is Verdexed's model probability, built, per the published methodology, from a logistic regression fit on thousands of prior games, using recent form, team strength, home-field advantage, rest, and, in baseball, the starting pitcher and the bullpen behind him. That model is point-in-time: it uses only information that existed before first pitch. The second number is the probability the market implies once the vig is removed. The gap between them is the edge, and in baseball it is usually small, because these markets are efficient. Verdexed logs every prediction beforehand and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, where lower is better. Both of today's inputs are missing, and trailing 30-day accuracy and Brier figures were also not retrievable, so no hit rate is cited here. One thing worth holding onto even on a normal day: a well-calibrated 60 percent side loses four times in ten. That is what 60 percent means.
The model's top edges today
There are none to publish. An edge requires a model probability and a market probability observed at the same moment, and only one of the two was available Friday, so this section stays empty. A slate with thin edges and a slate whose edges could not be read are different findings. Friday is the second kind.
Highest-confidence sides
What follows is the market's ranking, not the model's. Prices were surveyed Friday morning, are quoted across books, and move. Starters are listed probables unless a club has announced them.
**Braves at Phillies (Citizens Bank Park).** Atlanta was quoted near minus 152 with Philadelphia around plus 126, the firmest number found on the board, and the visitor is the favorite in the building of a 79-61 home team. Sale is the listed Atlanta starter against Sanchez, who appears in one probables listing at 16-4 with a 2.52 ERA, a season line not cross-confirmed here. The context does most of the work: this is the opener of a four-game set running September 4 through 7, and Philadelphia can cut a four-game deficit to two or see it stretched by Monday night.
**Rays at Rangers.** Tampa Bay was quoted near minus 122 with Texas around plus 102, a narrow price given the records behind it, 83-57 for the Rays against 70-71 for the Rangers. Nick Martinez is listed for Tampa Bay (reportedly 13-4 with a 2.99 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP across 153 2/3 innings) opposite Kumar Rocker (reportedly 5-10, 4.44, with a 1.43 WHIP). Texas took the series opener Thursday, 6-0.
**Giants at Mets (Citi Field).** New York was quoted around minus 128 in a game between clubs at 63-77 and 58-82, which is the market pricing pitching rather than standing. Nolan McLean is listed for the Mets against Matt Wilkinson, who carried no major league track record in the listings reachable here. That is the kind of input any model handles with the least confidence.
**Athletics at Mariners (10:10 p.m. ET, T-Mobile Park).** Logan Gilbert is listed for Seattle against Jack Perkins, with a total posted at 7.5. Seattle is reportedly calling up Lazaro Montes, a 21-year-old outfielder and the club's No. 4 prospect, so the lineup card is worth waiting for here.
**Brewers at Reds.** Milwaukee owns the best record found on Friday's board at 87-54 and sends Shane Drohan as its listed starter (reportedly 7-5, 3.75) against Rhett Lowder (reportedly 6-8, 5.14 across 112 innings). No price was confirmable from this environment, so none is quoted. Cincinnati's caveat is Elly De La Cruz, who left the August 30 game with a tight left quadriceps and whose manager, Terry Francona, indicated the injury was not thought to be serious. Day to day is not out, and it is not in the lineup either until the card is posted.
**Red Sox at Orioles (Camden Yards).** Ranger Suarez is the projected Boston starter (reportedly 5-4, 3.64). Baltimore's Friday starter could not be confirmed here, so none is named, and neither is a price. Boston is 76-65, Baltimore 69-72, and Thursday's opener went to the Red Sox 6-5.
What could go wrong
The largest risk today is a reader mistaking the ranking above for the model's. It is not. Beyond that, nearly every starter named above is a probable rather than an announcement, so a late scratch remains the likeliest way this read goes stale before first pitch, and one game on the board has no confirmed starter at all. Rosters expanded on September 1 from 26 players to 28, and those extra arms land in bullpens, the hardest part of a baseball price to see from outside. Aaron Judge also remains out for New York, with manager Aaron Boone calling a September 8 return possible rather than planned. Weather is the other live variable, and it moves a run total more than any lineup card does.
