MLB Today's Best Bets (September 2): No Model Board as Yamamoto Draws the Cardinals
By Verdexed Analytics
Wednesday's marquee listing is at Dodger Stadium, where Yoshinobu Yamamoto is the probable starter for the Dodgers against Andre Pallante and a St. Louis Cardinals club at 68-70. This column exists to set Verdexed's model probability beside the market's price, strip the sportsbook's margin out, and report the gap. Wednesday extends a run of days when that has not been possible. The verdexed.com prediction, edge, and accuracy surfaces are unreachable from this publishing environment, and per-game win probabilities, confidence tiers, and edge figures were not retrievable through search either. So there is no biggest edge to name today, nothing below is called an edge, and no probability below is attributed to the model. What follows is the market's read alone, labeled as such throughout, published as information and entertainment rather than betting advice, for a reader 21 or older located where sports wagering is legal.
How to read this
A normal edition carries two numbers per game. The first is Verdexed's model probability, built, per the published methodology, from a logistic regression fit on thousands of prior games, using recent form, team strength, home-field advantage, rest, and, in baseball, the starting pitcher and the bullpen behind him. That model is point-in-time: it uses only information that existed before first pitch. The second number is the probability the market implies once the vig is removed. The gap between them is the edge, and in baseball it is usually small, because these markets are efficient. Verdexed logs every prediction beforehand and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, where lower is better. Both of today's inputs are missing, and trailing 30-day accuracy and Brier figures were also not retrievable, so no hit rate is cited here. One thing worth holding onto even on a normal day: a well-calibrated 60 percent side loses four times in ten. That is what 60 percent means.
The model's top edges today
There are none to publish. An edge requires a model probability and a market probability observed at the same moment, and only one of the two was available Wednesday, so this section stays empty. A slate with thin edges and a slate whose edges could not be read are different findings, and Wednesday is the second kind.
Highest-confidence sides
What follows is the market's ranking, not the model's. Prices were surveyed Wednesday morning, are quoted across books, and move. Starters are listed probables unless a club has announced them.
**Cardinals at Dodgers (Dodger Stadium).** Los Angeles was quoted near minus 152 with St. Louis around plus 126, the firmest number found on the board. Yamamoto is the listed Dodgers starter against Pallante, and the records behind the price are 82-55 for Los Angeles against 68-70 for the Cardinals. The lineup note matters more than the arm: St. Louis placed shortstop Masyn Winn on the 10-day injured list with a broken left thumb.
**Giants at Pirates (6:40 p.m. ET, PNC Park).** Pittsburgh was also quoted around minus 152, San Francisco near plus 126, with Bubba Chandler listed for the Pirates and Landen Roupp for the Giants, the second game of a three-game set running September 1 through 3. The shape of the number is more interesting than its size: Pittsburgh is 68-71 and priced like a solid favorite, which means the market is pricing the visitor, a Giants club at 57-82.
**Padres at Reds (12:40 p.m. ET, Great American Ball Park).** San Diego was quoted near minus 144 with Cincinnati around plus 122. Casey Mize is the listed San Diego starter (reportedly 5-8 with a 3.45 ERA) against Brandon Williamson (reportedly 2-3, 6.11). The listed starter lines are further apart than the price is. Cincinnati's caveat is Elly De La Cruz, who left the August 30 game with a tight left quadriceps; manager Terry Francona indicated it was not serious. Day to day is not out, and it is not in the lineup either until the card is posted.
**White Sox at Astros.** Houston was quoted near minus 132 with Chicago around plus 110 and a total of 8, the narrowest favorite price found on the board. Davis Martin and Hayden Wesneski are the listed starters. A price that tight is the market saying it does not have a strong opinion, which is where a model number would be worth the most.
**Braves at Nationals.** The total, posted at 9, is the story rather than the side. Grant Holmes is listed for Atlanta after an August in which he posted a 3.04 ERA and held three of his four opponents scoreless. Washington's listed starter, Jackson Kent, has issued 15 walks in 19 1/3 innings across four major league starts, the ordinary reason a total sits up rather than down.
**Yankees at Angels (Angel Stadium).** The confirmable item here is a lineup absence, not a price. Aaron Judge has not played since May 31 with a rib stress fracture. He is on the road trip and has been hitting off a Trajekt pitching machine, and manager Aaron Boone has called a return around September 8, when New York is home against Colorado, possible rather than planned. Judge is out today. Neither starter is named here: the probables reachable from this environment carried initials rather than full names.
What could go wrong
The largest risk today is a reader mistaking the ranking above for the model's. It is not. Beyond that, nearly every starter named above is a probable rather than an announcement, so a late scratch remains the likeliest way this read goes stale before first pitch. Rosters expanded on September 1 from 26 players to 28, and those extra arms land in bullpens, the hardest part of a baseball price to see from outside. Weather is the other live variable on totals: the wind at Wrigley Field, where Milwaukee and Chicago play again, moves a run total more than any lineup card does.
