MLB Today's Best Bets (September 1): No Model Board as Skenes Faces Webb at PNC

By Verdexed Analytics

Fifteen games fill Tuesday's board, and the headline is a pitching matchup rather than a price: Paul Skenes starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates against Logan Webb and the San Francisco Giants at 6:40 p.m. ET at PNC Park, two front-line arms with nearly identical earned run averages built very differently. This column exists to set Verdexed's model probability beside the market's price, strip out the sportsbook's margin, and report the gap. Tuesday extends a run of days when that has not been possible. The verdexed.com prediction, edge, and accuracy surfaces are unreachable from this publishing environment (the request is refused at the network layer), and per-game win probabilities, confidence tiers, and edge figures were not retrievable through search either. So there is no biggest edge to name today, nothing below is called an edge, and no probability below is attributed to the model. What follows is the market's read alone, labeled as such throughout, published as information and entertainment rather than betting advice, for a reader 21 or older where sports wagering is legal.

How to read this

A normal edition carries two numbers per game. The first is Verdexed's model probability, built, per the published methodology, from a logistic regression fit on thousands of prior games, using recent form, team strength, home-field advantage, rest, and, in baseball, the starting pitcher and the bullpen behind him. That model is point-in-time: it sees only information that existed before first pitch. The second number is the probability the market implies once the vig is stripped out, and the gap between the two is the edge. It is usually small, because baseball markets are efficient. Verdexed logs every prediction beforehand and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, the calibration measure where lower is better. Both inputs are missing today, and trailing 30-day accuracy and Brier figures were not retrievable, so no hit rate is cited here. Worth keeping in mind even on a normal day: a well-calibrated 60 percent side loses four times in ten. That is what 60 percent means.

The model's top edges today

There are none to publish. An edge requires a model probability and a market probability observed at the same moment, and only one of the two was available Tuesday, so this section stays empty rather than carry a number not read off Verdexed's board. A thin-edge slate and a slate whose edges could not be read are different findings, and Tuesday is the second kind.

Highest-confidence sides

What follows is the market's ranking, not the model's: prices surveyed Tuesday morning, quoted across books and subject to movement. Starters are probables unless announced.

**Giants at Pirates (6:40 p.m. ET, PNC Park).** Quotes here diverged more than usual, which is itself informative: one survey had Pittsburgh near minus 162 and San Francisco plus 136, another minus 182 and plus 150, total 8.5 in both. Webb is reportedly 8-8 with a 3.72 ERA, Skenes 9-11 with a 3.79. The styles pull opposite ways on a total: Webb is a ground-ball pitcher who limits free bases, Skenes misses bats at an elite rate but carries a fly-ball profile. A price spread that wide across books is exactly where a model number would be most useful.

**Yankees at Angels (Angel Stadium).** New York was quoted near minus 178, the firmest price found on the board, with Gerrit Cole the reported starter. The caveat is the lineup rather than the arm: Aaron Judge, out with a rib stress fracture, is traveling on this August 31 to September 6 road trip and hopes to return sometime in September without a rehab assignment. Traveling is not playing. Treat him as out until the club says otherwise.

**Blue Jays at Guardians (Progressive Field).** Cleveland was quoted near minus 180 with Toronto around plus 152. The listed probables are Gavin Williams and Spencer Arrighetti, reported rather than announced, and which arm goes with which club could not be confirmed cleanly here.

**Padres at Reds (Cincinnati).** San Diego is the road favorite again, near minus 134 with Cincinnati around plus 114. Randy Vasquez (reportedly 4.02 ERA, 1.28 WHIP) is the listed San Diego starter against Nick Lodolo (reportedly 5.24). The road price stays modest despite the better listed starter line, which usually means the market is pricing lineups and bullpens rather than the marquee.

**Brewers at Cubs (Wrigley Field).** Monday's series continues and the price has flipped: Chicago near minus 126, Milwaukee around plus 108, Matthew Boyd reportedly starting for the Cubs and Robert Gasser for the Brewers. Milwaukee carries the better record, so a Cubs number in that range is the board's clearest disagreement between record and price.

Elsewhere: Philadelphia was quoted near minus 134 at Arizona (9:40 p.m. ET, Chase Field), Eduardo Rodriguez reportedly the Arizona starter, with a wild card berth still in play for the home side. St. Louis visits the Dodgers at 10:10 p.m. ET, where Masyn Winn (left thumb fracture) is reported as a possible return somewhere on this September 1 to 9 trip, which is a maybe rather than a lineup.

What could go wrong

The largest risk today is a reader mistaking the ranking above for the model's. It is not, and the two routinely disagree, which is the entire reason this column normally publishes both. Beyond that, September 1 is a roster date rather than an ordinary Tuesday: every active roster expands from 26 players to 28, the pitcher limit moves from 13 to 14, and any player on the 40-man roster or the 60-day injured list as of noon ET today is postseason eligible. Those effects land on bullpens, the hardest part of a baseball price to see from outside, and an arm added at noon is in no morning number. Nearly every starter named above is a probable rather than announced, so a late scratch remains the likeliest way this read goes stale.

Responsible play

**This is model output, not betting advice.** Verdexed publishes its model's probabilities and edges for informational and entertainment purposes only. Nothing here is a recommendation to place a wager, and no outcome is guaranteed, even the model's highest-confidence picks lose regularly.

**You must be 21+** (or the legal age in your jurisdiction) and located where sports wagering is legal to bet. Sports betting is not available everywhere; know and follow the laws where you are. Never bet more than you can afford to lose, and never chase losses.
