MLB Today's Best Bets (August 2): Yankees at Cubs Is the Widest Gap

By Verdexed Analytics

Verdexed's model reads Sunday as one loud disagreement surrounded by quiet agreement. The widest gap between a published projection and a market price sits at Wrigley Field, where the Yankees are priced close to a coin flip against the Cubs while at least one public model makes them a clear favorite, a spread of roughly ten percentage points. The rest of the slate is tighter, and the largest variable is not on any probables list: Monday's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline is already moving rosters, with the Dodgers reported to have acquired Tarik Skubal from Detroit. What follows is model output published for information and entertainment, not betting advice, and it assumes a reader who is 21 or older and located where wagering is legal.

How to read this

These are model probabilities and their gaps against market prices, not recommendations. Verdexed's published methodology describes point-in-time models that use only information available before first pitch, which keeps a reported accuracy figure honest rather than a product of hindsight. Matchup features (recent form, team strength, home field, rest, starting pitcher and bullpen) are simulated into a win probability, and an edge is the distance between that number and the vig-free probability implied by the market. Predictions are logged before the game and scored afterward on win accuracy and on Brier score, a calibration measure where lower is better. One caveat: those trailing 30-day figures were not retrievable this morning, and this desk does not print numbers it cannot source, so no recent accuracy rate is claimed. Published research puts even well-built baseball win models in the high 50s to low 60s percent range on straight-up winners, meaningful when calibrated and still losing regularly. No edge below is a guarantee, and where a per-game number was not retrievable, the game is described qualitatively.

The model's top edges today

**Yankees at Cubs (2:20 p.m. ET, Wrigley Field).** This is the day's widest gap, and the most interesting thing about it is how ordinary the underlying game looks. Both clubs enter at 62-48. The market has New York around -125 with Chicago near +104, close to a 53 percent read on the Yankees after removing the margin. SportsGrid's published projection is far more decisive, giving New York roughly 63 percent and a 1.1-run edge. Gerrit Cole (4-5, 3.57 ERA) is listed against Colin Rea (8-7, 4.67 ERA). Cole's July was his best stretch of the season (2.97 ERA, 39 strikeouts, four walks in 30.1 innings), and Rea has been better lately too, a 3.35 ERA since June 20. Two even teams and a near pick'em price is defensible, so the projection is the outlier here, not the line, and that is a reason to look closely rather than a reason to trust it.

**Rangers at Astros.** A smaller gap, but the two sides disagree on direction rather than degree. The market makes Houston the favorite near -126 with Texas around +104, while the same public projection gives Texas about 52 percent and a 0.3-run edge. Neither number is far from a coin flip, so a disagreement this size is closer to noise than signal. Starters were not confirmed by this desk.

**Cardinals and Blue Jays (1:37 p.m. ET, Toronto).** The listed matchup is lopsided on paper and the price is not, which is the finding. Max Scherzer is listed for Toronto carrying a 9.49 ERA and an 8.21 fielding independent mark, against Michael McGreevy and his 3.57 ERA, yet Toronto has been quoted as a slight favorite near -115. The market is leaning on lineups and bullpens rather than starters, which leaves little room for a side edge, and no retrievable projection separated these teams by much.

Highest-confidence sides

**Red Sox at Dodgers (7:20 p.m. ET, Dodger Stadium).** The firmest read on the board, and the least to say about it. Los Angeles has been quoted in the -170 to -176 range, roughly 63 to 64 percent before removing the margin, and the public projection lands at 64 percent. Price and projection agree, which is what a confident side with no edge looks like. The starter matchup argues the other way: Emmet Sheehan (4-7, 4.95 ERA) is listed for Los Angeles against Jake Bennett (6-4, 2.74 ERA). Skubal is reported as acquired, not as pitching today.

**Twins at Mariners (4:10 p.m. ET, Seattle).** George Kirby (8-9, 3.98 ERA) is listed against Taj Bradley (9-4, 3.65 ERA), with Seattle favored. The confirmed news favors the home side: Byron Buxton went back on the 10-day injured list on July 29 with a right hip impingement, so Minnesota is without its best power and speed threat. Today's exact price could not be separated from Saturday's quotes, so the read stays qualitative: the model leans Seattle, and the market appears to agree.

**Phillies at Orioles (1:35 p.m. ET, Camden Yards).** Yesterday the widest projection-to-price gap on the board sat in this series, in Baltimore's favor. Today's listed matchup, Zack Wheeler against Kyle Bradish, points the other direction, and no per-game projection was retrievable to size it. A firm side without a claimed edge.

**Tigers at Athletics.** Listed for the honest reason: there is nothing here. Keider Montero and Gage Jump are the probables and the projection sits near 52 percent for the home side, which is not an edge.

What could go wrong

The deadline is the dominant risk, not any lineup. It hits Monday at 6 p.m. ET, and the template for what that does to a board already happened: the Angels scratched Jose Soriano from his Saturday start amid trade talks and went with a bullpen game behind Brent Suter. Any starter listed above can be scratched, pulled early, or traded between publication and first pitch. Probables remain projections until a club confirms them. Beyond that: bullpens used hard in a day game, wind at Wrigley, and prices that move once lineups post.
