MLB Today's Best Bets (July 31): Skenes Is on the Mound and the Price Is the Widest Gap

By Verdexed Analytics

The Verdexed model opens a 15 game Friday board with its loudest disagreement pointed at the cheapest side on the slate: Cincinnati, at home, priced as an underdog against a Pittsburgh club handing the ball to Paul Skenes. This is model output, not betting advice, written for readers 21 or older located where sports wagering is legal. The market has the Pirates near -126, a number built almost entirely on one arm. At least one published game model splits the matchup the other way, giving the Reds 51 percent. That gap, roughly five points of win probability on the side the price ignores, is the widest confirmable disagreement on today's board.

How to read this

These are model leans and gaps against market consensus, published for information rather than as recommendations. Verdexed's stated method runs per-game features (team strength, recent form, park, rest, home field, and in baseball the starter and bullpen) through a model fit on thousands of prior games, logs every prediction before first pitch, and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, where lower is better. An edge is defined as the gap between the model's own probability and the market's implied probability once the sportsbook's margin is removed. Three disclosures belong at the top rather than buried. Verdexed's trailing 30 day hit rate and Brier figure were not retrievable at the time of writing, so no accuracy number is quoted here rather than an approximate one invented. Verdexed's own per-game win probabilities were likewise unavailable this morning, so the leans below are directional, built on confirmable inputs and clearly attributed third-party projections, with no invented percentages. And baseball is the hardest of the four major sports to forecast: a well calibrated 60 percent side still loses 40 percent of the time, which is the math working normally rather than the model breaking.

The model's top edges today

**Pirates at Reds (Skenes vs Greene, 6:10 PM ET, Great American Ball Park).** The day's widest gap, and the rare case where the confirmed starter argues against the price rather than for it. Pittsburgh has been listed near -126 with Cincinnati around +108, implying roughly 56 percent for the Pirates before the margin comes out. SportsGrid's published model went the other way, projecting the Reds to win by 0.2 runs and splitting the game 51 percent to Cincinnati. Skenes (9-9, 3.65 ERA, 149 strikeouts) is confirmed for this start, announced as part of Pittsburgh's four game series plan. Hunter Greene (2-2, 7.06 ERA) is the counterweight the price leans on, but his line carries an asterisk: he had surgery in early March to remove bone chips from his right elbow and did not debut until early July, so the ERA sits on a small, unrepresentative sample. Records favor neither side, with Pittsburgh 55-55 and Cincinnati 51-57. The honest read is against paying a road favorite price on a .500 team, not a confident case for Cincinnati outright.

**Yankees at Cubs (Warren vs Imanaga, 2:20 PM ET, Wrigley Field).** The board's clearest mismatch between price and standings. Chicago has been listed near -148 with New York at +126, implying about 60 percent for the Cubs before the margin, yet the two clubs are separated by a single game: Chicago 62-47, New York 61-48. FanDuel Research's published projection landed at 55.8 percent for the Cubs, a few points under what the price implies. Shota Imanaga (7-8, 3.72 ERA, 113 strikeouts) is the better of the two starters on the season against Will Warren (7-5, 4.41 ERA, 102 strikeouts), which explains part of the number, but not all of it. The gap points modestly toward New York.

**Tigers at Athletics (Mize vs Springs, 9:40 PM ET).** Worth listing precisely because there is no edge here. Detroit has been priced near -154, implying about 61 percent before the margin, and SportsGrid's published projection put the Tigers at 61 percent. Price and projection agree almost exactly. That is the firmest side of the day and the one with the least to say about it, which is a real finding rather than filler.

**Red Sox at Dodgers (Suarez vs undetermined, 10:10 PM ET, Dodger Stadium).** The largest talent gap on the board, and the least settled. Los Angeles enters at 68-40 against a Boston club at 56-51, but as of the most recent reporting the Dodgers had not named a Friday starter, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto lined up for Saturday and a bullpen game the presumed plan. Ranger Suarez is confirmed for Boston, the first of three consecutive left-handers in the series. No confirmable market number was retrievable, and with the single largest feature in any baseball model still blank on the home side, the honest output is to wait for the lineup card rather than post a lean.

**Rangers at Astros (deGrom vs Brown, 8:15 PM ET).** The night's best pitching matchup on paper, Jacob deGrom opposite Hunter Brown, with no confirmable consensus number retrievable this morning. Two front line starters compress the range of outcomes and shrink whatever edge either side might carry, so no price is quoted and no lean is claimed.

What could go wrong

The Dodgers game is the obvious live risk: an unannounced starter is not a small caveat but a missing input, and a named arm this afternoon can move that game's number several points in either direction. Skenes is confirmed, which removes the usual projected-starter problem in the headline game, but Cincinnati's bullpen has been carrying a rotation still absorbing Greene's return, and a short outing on either side reshapes the read. The 2:20 PM ET first pitch front loads the board, so weather and lineup news land with little runway, and summer wind at Wrigley moves totals more than sides. Finally, the trade deadline is Monday, August 3 at 6 p.m. ET rather than today, so rosters can still change before the weekend's games.
