MLB Today's Best Bets (July 17): Dodgers-Yankees Headlines a Coin-Flip-Heavy Friday

By Verdexed Analytics

Verdexed's model ran its numbers across a full 15-game Major League Baseball board on Friday, July 17, the first complete day of action since the All-Star break, and the read is a familiar one for midsummer: a lot of near-even games and modest edges rather than a marquee mismatch. The night's headline is the Los Angeles Dodgers visiting the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium (7:05 p.m. ET), a meeting of two of the sport's best rosters that the model and the market both grade as close to a coin flip. That closeness is the story of the slate. When the model's probabilities line up with the sportsbooks on the biggest games, the sides can still be strong while the price edges stay small. What follows is model output for information and entertainment, not betting advice, and it assumes a reader who is 21 or older and located where wagering is legal.

How to read this

These are the model's win probabilities and its edges against the market consensus, not recommendations. Verdexed logs every prediction before first pitch and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, a standard calibration measure where lower is better. Its published methodology reports a backtest over 542 games from late March through early May 2026 that cut Brier roughly 7 percent versus a market baseline and tightened the model's worst calibration gap from about 42 percent down to near 3 percent. Well calibrated is not the same as always right. A side the model likes at a 55 percent win probability is still expected to lose almost half the time, and even its strongest favorites lose regularly. For the current running MLB hit rate and Brier score, see verdexed.com/mlb/accuracy. No number here is a guarantee.

The model's top edges today

On a board this even, the honest finding up front is that the biggest edges are small, and several of the per-game probabilities were not retrievable on the public surface at publication. Where that is the case, the model's lean is described qualitatively rather than presented as a fabricated number.

**Dodgers at Yankees (7:05 p.m. ET).** This is the marquee game and, tellingly, not a high-confidence side. Los Angeles carries the majors' best record (61-36) into the Bronx against a strong Yankees club (54-42), and the market has installed the Dodgers as only a slight road favorite, near a pick with an implied probability in the low 50s. The model sits in the same neighborhood, which is the whole point: two elite teams, a near coin flip, and no meaningful edge to report. The projected starters are Gerrit Cole for New York and Roki Sasaki for Los Angeles, but treat both as reported probables rather than confirmed until the clubs post lineups; post-break rotations are still settling.

**Rays at Red Sox (doubleheader, Fenway Park).** The American League East rivals play a day-night twin bill, the makeup of a rained-out earlier meeting, with the opener around 1:35 p.m. ET. The market makes Boston a modest home favorite in the game on the board (roughly a mid-50s implied probability), and the model's read tracks close to that rather than pushing a strong number. The specific per-game win probabilities were not retrievable at publication, so the lean is stated qualitatively. A doubleheader is its own caveat: bullpens get stretched, a spot starter or bulk arm can appear, and the starters listed for either half are worth confirming before first pitch.

**The middle of the board.** On a chalk-and-coin-flip Friday, the cleaner value, such as it is, tends to live in the near-even games where the model disagrees with consensus by a few points rather than on the games everyone can see. Across this slate the model's biggest win-probability sides are simply the strongest teams at home or on the road, and its biggest price edges are a handful of points in the middle-tier matchups. None of them, on the numbers retrievable today, clears the bar of a strong, high-confidence edge. This is a thin-edge board, and saying so plainly is more useful than manufacturing conviction the model does not have.

Highest-confidence sides

There is no standout, low-70s favorite anchoring this board the way a dominant starter can carry a slate. The Dodgers are the best team playing, but they are priced near even in a road game against a quality opponent, which keeps them out of high-confidence territory. The most that can be said honestly is that the model leans toward the better rosters in the closer games, in line with the market, and that a lean is not a conviction side. If a strong number surfaces once lineups and confirmed starters post, that is where it would show up; as of publication, it has not.

What could go wrong

The clearest risk is the pitching itself. This is the first full weekend out of the break, projected starters are exactly that, and a late scratch or a piggyback plan can flip a game's read entirely, since a bullpen game changes the projection materially. The Rays-Red Sox doubleheader compounds that: two games in a day means heavy bullpen usage and unusual pitching decisions that the numbers cannot fully anticipate. Weather is the other midsummer wildcard, most of all on run totals, with a Reds-Rockies game at Coors Field where altitude and wind routinely swing the over-under regardless of the sides. And across a 15-game board, variance in any single nine-inning game is enormous. Favorites priced near even win only about half the time, which is exactly why even the model's preferred sides tonight are leans, not locks.
