MLB Today's Best Bets (July 12): Skenes Headlines the Final Pre-Break Sunday

By Verdexed Analytics

Verdexed's model ran its numbers across Sunday's 13-game board, the final day of first-half play before the All-Star break, and the read splits into two groups: a handful of clear favorites where the model and the market agree, and several near-even matchups built around premium starting pitching. The marquee game, and the model's headline, is in Pittsburgh, where a confirmed Paul Skenes start pits the Pirates against the first-place Brewers early in the afternoon. The single biggest separation, though, sits in the pick'em ace duels rather than the chalk. What follows is model output for information and entertainment, not betting advice, and it assumes a reader who is 21 or older and located where wagering is legal.

How to read this

These are the model's win probabilities and its edges against the market consensus, not recommendations. Verdexed logs every prediction before first pitch and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, a standard calibration measure where lower is better, with nothing edited after the fact. Its published methodology reports a backtest that cut Brier roughly 7 percent versus a market baseline and tightened the model's worst calibration gap from about 42 percent down to near 3 percent, and it is built so that a side tagged at 65 percent should win close to 65 percent of the time over a large sample. An edge, in Verdexed's terms, is the gap between the model's own probability and the vig-free probability implied by the market price. Well calibrated is not the same as always right. A side the model likes at a low-60s win probability is still expected to lose close to two times in five, and no number here is a guarantee.

Highest-confidence sides

**Yankees at Nationals (1:35 p.m. ET).** New York is the largest favorite on the board, priced near -199, an implied win probability around 66 percent. Cam Schlittler is the projected starter for the Yankees and has been excellent, carrying a 2.01 ERA into the day, while Washington counters with Miles Mikolas and his 5.78 ERA. The model leans the same direction as the market here, which makes this the day's sturdiest confidence read but also its thinnest price edge: when the book already prices a side at two-to-one, there is little room left to exploit.

**Brewers at Pirates (12:15 p.m. ET).** This is the headline. Skenes is confirmed to start for Pittsburgh, and Milwaukee's original probable, Jacob Misiorowski, is set to sit with arm fatigue, so left-hander Robert Gasser draws the assignment instead. That late change matters: a confirmed ace against a spot starter is exactly the kind of matchup where the model's pitching input carries weight. Even so, the market has priced Pittsburgh only around -130 at home, closer to a coin flip than a runaway, and at least one public model actually leaned slightly to Milwaukee. Treat this as the model's marquee spot, not its most confident one.

The model's top edges today

Honest framing first: this is not a slate screaming with value. The clearest separation between the model and the market shows up in the games the book has priced near even, where two front-line starters keep the projected margin tight and a small model lean turns into a visible edge.

**Phillies at Tigers (1:40 p.m. ET).** This is the best pitching matchup on the board, with Zack Wheeler (9-1, 2.28 ERA) lined up for Philadelphia against Tarik Skubal (5-4, 3.06 ERA) in Detroit. The market has it close to a pick'em, roughly Detroit -112 and Philadelphia -108, and in a game priced that tightly even a modest model tilt registers as one of the slate's more meaningful edges. Both arms are projected rather than confirmed until the lineup cards are official, so a getaway-day workload cap is worth watching.

**Astros at Rangers (2:35 p.m. ET).** Jacob deGrom is lined up for Texas, and Houston's starter was less settled in pregame reporting, so the Astros' side is best treated as projected. On the strength of the Rangers' run prevention (a team ERA near 4.07 against Houston's 4.81) and deGrom's arm, the model leans modestly to Texas at home, though the projected margin stays narrow enough that this reads as a lean rather than a strong call.

**Mariners at Rays (1:40 p.m. ET).** The market disagreement here is the interesting part. Tampa Bay entered the day at 55-37, one of the better records in the league, yet Seattle is the road favorite at roughly -128 behind Emerson Hancock, with the Rays and Ian Seymour priced as home underdogs near +106. When a strong home team is a dog, the model's read of the individual matchup is what to weigh against that surprising line rather than the season records alone.

What could go wrong

The largest risk on the final day before a four-day break is roster and rotation management. Clubs heading into the layoff may cap a starter's innings, empty the bullpen without worrying about tomorrow, or rest regulars for the second half, any of which can move a projection after first pitch. Several of today's starters, including deGrom, Wheeler, and Skubal, are best treated as projected until confirmed, and the Milwaukee change from Misiorowski to Gasser is a reminder that a late scratch can flip the model read entirely. In the near-even games the model highlights, the edge is thin enough that a single bullpen decision, a weather-shortened afternoon, or a defensive miscue can erase it.

Responsible play

**This is model output, not betting advice.** Verdexed publishes its model's probabilities and edges for informational and entertainment purposes only. Nothing here is a recommendation to place a wager, and no outcome is guaranteed, even the model's highest-confidence picks lose regularly.
