MLB Today's Best Bets, July 10: Model Leans Dodgers as Ohtani Starts, Edges Run Thin on Chalk

By Verdexed Analytics

Verdexed's model ran its numbers across all 15 games on Friday's July 10 board, and the read is chalk. The single highest-confidence side belongs to the Los Angeles Dodgers at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks, a game where the model's projected favorite lines up with the sportsbooks, which priced the Dodgers near -255, an implied win probability in the low 70s. That agreement is the story of the whole slate. When the model and the market point the same direction on the night's biggest favorites, the probabilities are strong but the price edges are small. What follows is model output for information and entertainment, not betting advice, and it assumes a reader who is 21 or older and located where wagering is legal.

How to read this

These are the model's win probabilities and its edges against the market consensus, not recommendations. Verdexed logs every prediction before first pitch and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, a standard calibration measure where lower is better. Its published methodology reports a backtest over 542 games from late March through early May 2026 that cut Brier roughly 7 percent versus a market baseline and tightened the model's worst calibration gap from about 42 percent down to near 3 percent. Well calibrated is not the same as always right. A side the model likes at a low-70s win probability, like tonight's Dodgers, is still expected to lose close to one time in four. No number here is a guarantee.

Highest-confidence sides

**Diamondbacks at Dodgers (10:10 p.m. ET).** This is the model's top side and the slate's headline, with a large caveat attached. Shohei Ohtani is expected to make his final pitching start of the first half, and he has been the best version of himself on the mound: a 1.79 ERA with at least six innings in 13 of his 14 starts this season. Arizona counters with Eduardo Rodriguez. The Dodgers project as a clear favorite, in the same low-70s range the book is pricing. The caveat is real: Ohtani tweaked his right biceps in his last outing, and the club has said it is prepared to pivot if he cannot go, so treat this as a projected start, not a confirmed one.

**Phillies at Tigers (6:40 p.m. ET).** A clean, confirmed pitching matchup, Aaron Nola for Philadelphia against Jack Flaherty for Detroit. The model leans modestly toward the side with the pitching and lineup edge here rather than treating it as a strong play. Note that Tarik Skubal does not pitch in this opener; he is lined up for Sunday against Zack Wheeler, so anyone reading a Skubal number into Friday has the wrong game.

**Blue Jays at Padres (9:40 p.m. ET).** Shane Bieber takes the ball for Toronto against JP Sears for San Diego. The model's lean rests on the starting-pitching gap rather than the standings, which is why this projects closer than the teams' records (Toronto entered at 44-49, San Diego at 46-46) might suggest. It is a lean, not a conviction side.

The model's top edges today

On a board this favorite-heavy, the honest finding is that the biggest edges are small. The Dodgers are the strongest side but offer little price value at -255, because paying a steep number on a favorite the market already respects is where model-market agreement erases the edge. The cleaner value on a chalk night usually sits in the middle of the board, in the near-coin-flip games where the model disagrees with the consensus by a few points rather than on the marquee favorites everyone can see. Today that middle tier, the Yankees-Nationals and Brewers-Pirates types where the market sits in the high 50s, is where the model's edges, such as they are, live. None of them clears the bar of a strong, high-confidence edge, and Verdexed's read is that Friday is a thin-edge slate carried by one big-name starter.

What could go wrong

The obvious risk is the headline itself. Ohtani's start is projected, not confirmed, and a biceps issue plus a late scratch would flip the Dodgers read entirely, since a bullpen game changes that projection materially. Beyond that, this is a full 15-game July slate, which means late lineup scratches, heavy-bullpen days coming out of the pre-break stretch, and weather that can swing the run totals. Favorites priced in the 70s cash more often than not, but "more often than not" is exactly why even the model's best side is not a lock.
