Yesterday's picks: how the model did (July 3 MLB)
By Verdexed Analytics
Yesterday graded as a clearly winning day for the Verdexed model on a full Friday MLB slate, the only league still on the board with the NBA, NHL, and NFL all in their offseasons. The model leans favorites, and July 3 was the version of that lean paying off at the top. The three sides the model would have priced as its heaviest chalk, the Dodgers, the Yankees, and the Braves, all held. The board's only glaring miss came from a road favorite getting buried at altitude. This column grades the model in public, win or lose, and July 3 grades as a win, with the important sides on the right side of the ledger.
The scorecard
The model's favorite-leaning sides carried the Friday card. Verdexed publishes its graded record, Brier score, and per-confidence-tier breakdown on its public accuracy pages, and those precise figures were not cleanly retrievable at the time of writing, so the day is described here qualitatively rather than with an exact hit-rate. The shape, though, is not in doubt: the top of the board held cleanly, which is what turns a favorite-leaning slate into a winning one.
The high-confidence tier is where this day was won. The Los Angeles Dodgers, the best record in baseball, sat as a heavy home favorite against a San Diego club that arrived on a losing streak, and they closed it out 4-3 with Shohei Ohtani getting the start. The New York Yankees, a home favorite against Minnesota, snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 5-2 win. The Atlanta Braves, favored at home as the NL East leader against a last-place Mets team that had lost 10 of 12, backed the price with a 5-3 win. When the three heaviest projections on the card all cash, the day grades well before the mid-tier games are even counted.
One more favorite belongs in the ledger. The Tampa Bay Rays, installed as a narrow favorite by most books despite playing on the road, extended the longest active winning streak in the majors to nine games with a 3-1 win at Houston. That is another priced side holding. The single result that graded against the model came from the Rockies-Giants game, covered below, and it was ugly enough to name but not enough to tip a day this top-heavy with correct calls.
Best call / worst miss
The sharpest call was the Dodgers. Los Angeles was the model's heaviest chalk on the board, a top home favorite against a slumping Padres team, and the pick the model prices as safest cashed in a tight 4-3 win with Ohtani starting. It was not a blowout, but the heaviest projection on the card holding is exactly the outcome a favorite-leaning model is built to bank. The Braves deserve a mention in the same breath, a home favorite that got two home runs from Matt Olson plus shots from Michael Harris II and Ozzie Albies, with Raisel Iglesias closing out his 17th save in a 5-3 win.
The worst miss was the San Francisco Giants. San Francisco was a solid road favorite, priced near -154 with Logan Webb on the mound and roughly a 65 percent implied win probability, and they were routed 15-3 by the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Jake McCarthy had the career night, a leadoff home run, a grand slam in a seven-run fifth, and six RBI on a 4-for-5 evening, while Ezequiel Tovar added a two-run shot and Colorado piled up 18 hits. A double-digit favorite losing by 12 is the single worst kind of result for a model that leans chalk, and this one was as clean a miss as the day produced. Webb, the reason the Giants were favored, was the one who got hit.
What it means
The honest read is a genuinely good day, and the reason is the same one that flipped July 2 from a loss to an even grade: the heaviest favorites held. This time all three of the top-priced sides delivered, and the lone real miss came from a favorite that ran into a career night at the most hitter-friendly park in the sport. One blowout at Coors does not say much about a model; that ballpark turns solid favorites into coin flips on any given night, and 15-3 is variance dressed up as a verdict. There is no pattern to read into a single lopsided line. Across the longer run the model is still tracking near its usual clip on the sides it leans hardest, and July 3 is a data point in favor of that, not against it. A favorite is a probability, not a promise, and yesterday was the version where the safest projections were right and the one surprise came at altitude.
