Yesterday's picks: how the model did (July 2 MLB)

By Verdexed Analytics

Yesterday landed as a roughly even day for the Verdexed model on a full Thursday MLB slate, the only league still on the board with the NBA, NHL, and NFL all in their offseasons. The model leans favorites, and July 2 cut both ways for that lean. The difference from the day before is that the top of the board held this time: the two heaviest favorites the model would have leaned on, the Dodgers and the Mariners, both delivered, even as a pair of home favorites underneath them fell. This column grades the model in public, win or lose, and July 2 grades as close to even, with the important sides on the right side of the ledger and the misses coming a tier down.

The scorecard

The model's favorite-leaning sides split across the Thursday card, but the split was weighted differently than July 1's. Verdexed publishes its graded record, Brier score, and per-confidence-tier breakdown on its public accuracy pages, and those precise figures were not cleanly retrievable at the time of writing, so the day is described here qualitatively rather than with an exact hit-rate. The shape is clear from the results.

The high-confidence tier is where July 1 came apart, and July 2 was the reversal. The Los Angeles Dodgers, the best record in baseball and a heavy home favorite against an ice-cold San Diego club, fell behind 6-0 and still won, erasing the deficit to beat the Padres 12-7 in their biggest comeback since 2022. It was not clean, but the pick the model prices as safest cashed. The Seattle Mariners, a home favorite behind ace Bryce Miller, were cleaner still, winning 1-0 to complete a three-game sweep of the Angels. Two top-tier favorites holding is what keeps this day from tipping negative.

The misses came a step down the board, and both were home favorites. The Philadelphia Phillies, favored at home, were beaten 6-1 by the Pittsburgh Pirates, one of the weaker clubs on the schedule. The Atlanta Braves, also at home, led 5-3 before their bullpen gave up seven runs in the seventh and lost 9-5 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Two favored sides falling is what keeps the day off the clearly winning side, but neither was the heaviest chalk on the board, and that weighting is why July 2 reads as even rather than a loss.

Best call / worst miss

The sharpest call was the Mariners. Seattle sat as a home favorite behind Bryce Miller, and Miller carried a no-hitter into the seventh before finishing with seven shutout innings, two hits, no walks, and eight strikeouts. Cal Raleigh drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth for the game's only run, and Andres Munoz closed it out for his 16th save in a 1-0 win that swept the Angels. When a favorite's ace throws that line, the model's lean earned its keep. The Dodgers deserve a mention in the same breath, a heaviest-favorite spot that survived a 6-0 hole to win 12-7, with Kyle Tucker and Dalton Rushing going back-to-back after Roki Sasaki was tagged for six early.

The worst miss was the Phillies. Philadelphia was a home favorite against Pittsburgh and got routed 6-1, with Esmerlyn Valdez tripling and driving in two and Endy Rodriguez and Nick Gonzales both homering for the Pirates. A solid home favorite losing by five to a heavy underdog is the kind of result that grades hardest against a favorite-leaning model. Atlanta belongs in the same paragraph, a home favorite that led 5-3 and let it slip in a seven-run seventh, another favored side the model would have leaned on that did not hold.

What it means

The honest read is an even day that graded better than July 1 for one reason: the heaviest favorites held. A day earlier, the model's top pick, the Dodgers, was upset by six, and the column called it a middling-to-poor day on that weighting. July 2 flipped that, with the Dodgers and Mariners both cashing at the top while the misses came from mid-tier home chalk. Weighting matters more than a raw count in both directions, and it cut the model's way this time. There is no trend to read into two home favorites falling on the same night; that is variance, not a pattern. Across the longer run the model is still tracking near its usual clip on the sides it leans hardest, and one even Thursday does not move that arc. A favorite is a probability, not a promise, and July 2 was the version where the safest projections were right and the surprises came from a tier down.
