MLB Today's Best Bets (September 7): No Model Board on a Labor Day Slate

By Verdexed Analytics

Labor Day baseball opens at 1:05 p.m. ET in Philadelphia and does not close until a 10:05 p.m. ET first pitch in Sacramento, and the game carrying the most weight is the first one. The Atlanta Braves visit the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park with Jesus Luzardo and Bryce Elder listed as the probable starters, opening a four-game set that will shape the National League East for the rest of September. This column exists to set Verdexed's model probability beside the market's price, strip the sportsbook's margin out of that price, and report the gap. Monday extends a run of days when that has not been possible. The verdexed.com prediction, edge, and accuracy surfaces are blocked from this publishing environment, and per-game win probabilities, confidence tiers, and edge figures were not retrievable through search either. So there is no biggest edge to name today, nothing below is called an edge, and no probability below is attributed to the model. What follows is a matchup and market read, labeled as such throughout, published as information and entertainment, not betting advice, for a reader 21 or older where wagering is legal.

How to read this

A normal edition carries two numbers per game. The first is Verdexed's model probability, built point-in-time from information that existed before first pitch: recent form, team strength, home-field advantage, rest, and, in baseball, the starting pitcher and the bullpen behind him. Per the published methodology, the headline probability blends that model output with the de-vigged probability implied by current moneylines, while the edge is computed from the model's independent opinion rather than the blended number, because measuring a market-blended probability against the market would be circular. The model is calibrated on held-out games, so a stated 65 percent is meant to be a real 65 percent. Verdexed logs every prediction before the game and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, where lower is better. Both of today's inputs are missing, and trailing 30-day accuracy and Brier figures were also not retrievable, so no hit rate is cited here and no claim is made about how the model has been performing lately. One thing holds even on a normal day: a well-calibrated 60 percent side loses four times in ten. That is what 60 percent means.

The model's top edges today

There are none to publish. An edge requires a model probability and a market probability observed at the same moment, and only one of the two was available Monday. A slate with thin edges and a slate whose edges could not be read are different findings, and this is the second kind. Nothing below is a pick, a lean, or a rated play.

Monday's board, matchup side only

**Braves at Phillies, 1:05 p.m. ET, Citizens Bank Park.** Luzardo, reported as the National League Pitcher of the Month for August, carries a 3.02 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, and 209 strikeouts. Elder is reported at 8-8 with a 4.11 ERA and 121 strikeouts. Atlanta was listed at 85-58 and Philadelphia at 80-63 entering the holiday, though weekend records reported by different outlets do not agree to the game, so treat those as approximate. On starting pitching alone this is the clearest separation on the board, which is exactly the sort of gap a market prices in full before anyone gets to it.

**Guardians at Orioles.** Cleveland is expected to start left-hander Joey Cantillo, described in preview material as carrying roughly a 3.81 run average and a 1.48 WHIP across 29 starts, against Baltimore left-hander Trevor Rogers, listed near a 4.30 run average and a 1.23 WHIP across 26 starts, with softer recent form than his season line. First pitch time was not confirmed and is left unstated rather than guessed.

**Mets at Marlins, afternoon, Miami.** New York's Jonah Tong (1-1, 3.60 ERA, eight career appearances) opposite Miami's Eury Perez (7-10, 3.72 ERA), both 23-year-old right-handers. Perez's home split is reported better than his overall line, and Miami was quoted near a coin flip, around minus 113. A price that close is where a model probability would actually change the read, and none is available.

**Cardinals at Giants, 8:10 p.m. ET, Oracle Park, on NBC and Peacock.** Michael McGreevy is the projected St. Louis starter against San Francisco's Logan Webb. St. Louis was reported at 72-72 entering the series and San Francisco well under .500, which makes the national window more about Webb than the standings.

**Blue Jays at Athletics, 10:05 p.m. ET, Sutter Health Park.** Dylan Cease, who has allowed one earned run or fewer in three of his last four starts according to preview material, against left-hander Jacob Lopez (6-4, 4.71 ERA, 1.46 WHIP). Toronto was quoted around minus 201 with the Athletics near plus 168 and a total around 8.5. That is the widest price on the board, and it is where a model number would matter most, because a small probability disagreement on a heavy favorite moves more than a large one on a pick-em. No model number exists here today, so nothing is claimed about it.

What could go wrong

Start with the starters. Every arm named above is a listed or projected probable rather than a confirmed one, and a late scratch changes the shape of a baseball game more than any other single event. September compounds it. Rosters are expanded, and the Braves and Phillies open a four-game set with the rest of the week in view, so a listed starter can be pulled early by design rather than by trouble. Weather is the standing risk for the Eastern afternoon games, particularly for totals. The largest caveat is the one this article opened with. Without model probabilities there is no measured disagreement with the market, so nothing here has been tested against a price. Read it as context on the day's baseball, not as a rated card.

Responsible play

**This is model output, not betting advice.** Verdexed publishes its model's probabilities and edges for informational and entertainment purposes only. Nothing here is a recommendation to place a wager, and no outcome is guaranteed, even the model's highest-confidence picks lose regularly.

**You must be 21+** (or the legal age in your jurisdiction) and located where sports wagering is legal to bet. Sports betting is not available everywhere; know and follow the laws where you are. Never bet more than you can afford to lose, and never chase losses.
