MLB Today's Best Bets (August 31): No Model Board as Brewers and Cubs Open at Wrigley
By Verdexed Analytics
Twelve games fill Monday's board, all evening starts, and the headline is a division race rather than a price: the Milwaukee Brewers (85-52) open a four-game series at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs (77-59) at 7:40 p.m. ET, with Chicago 7 1/2 games back and 26 to play. This column exists to set Verdexed's model probability beside the market's price, strip out the sportsbook's margin, and report the gap. Monday extends a run of days when that has not been possible. The verdexed.com prediction, edge, and accuracy surfaces are unreachable from this publishing environment, and per-game win probabilities, confidence tiers, and edge figures were not retrievable through search either. So there is no biggest edge to name today. Nothing below is called an edge, and no probability here is attributed to the model. That is a data access limit on this column, now eight editions long. What follows is the market's read alone, labeled as such throughout, published as information and entertainment rather than betting advice, for a reader 21 or older where sports wagering is legal.
How to read this
A normal edition carries two numbers per game. The first is Verdexed's model probability, built, per the published methodology, from a logistic regression fit on thousands of past games, using recent form, team strength, home-field advantage, rest, and, in baseball, the starting pitcher and the bullpen. That model is point-in-time: it sees only information that existed before first pitch. The second number is the probability the market implies once the vig is stripped out, and the gap between the two is the edge. Verdexed logs every prediction beforehand and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, the calibration measure where lower is better. Both inputs are missing today. Trailing 30-day accuracy and Brier figures were not retrievable, so no hit rate is cited. Even in a normal edition, a well-calibrated 60 percent side loses four times in ten, which is exactly what 60 percent means.
The model's top edges today
There are none to publish. An edge requires a model probability and a market probability observed at the same moment, and only one of the two was available Monday, so this section stays empty rather than carry a number not read off Verdexed's board. A thin-edge slate and a slate whose edges could not be read are different findings, and Monday is the latter.
Highest-confidence sides
What follows is the market's ranking, not the model's: prices surveyed Monday morning. Starters are probables unless a club has announced them, and prices move by book and hour.
**Brewers at Cubs (7:40 p.m. ET, Wrigley Field).** The widest price on the board and the most consequential game on it. One Monday quote had Milwaukee near minus 196 with Chicago around plus 162 and the total at 8. Kyle Harrison is the reported Milwaukee starter and Clay Holmes the reported Chicago starter, both projected rather than announced. Milwaukee leads the season series four games to two, and the clubs play seven of their next ten. Pete Crow-Armstrong is the reason Chicago is not yet finished: .278/.371/.685 with 12 home runs across 26 August games, including a three-homer Saturday against Cincinnati. A minus 196 favorite is priced near a two-in-three outcome, not a sure thing.
**Mariners at Red Sox (6:45 p.m. ET, Fenway Park).** Boston was quoted near minus 166 with Seattle around plus 140. George Kirby (reportedly 9-10, 4.02 ERA) is the listed Seattle starter against Payton Tolle (reportedly 8-6, 3.09). Both are probables.
**Padres at Reds (6:40 p.m. ET, Cincinnati).** San Diego is the road favorite, near minus 148 with Cincinnati around plus 126, exactly the sort of listing a model number would be worth checking against. Michael King is the reported San Diego starter and Brady Singer the reported Cincinnati starter. Both rosters are thinned: San Diego placed Luis Rengifo (right knee sprain) and Gavin Sheets (left foot sprain) on the injured list ahead of Sunday's finale, and Cincinnati is without a long list of arms, Hunter Greene and Joe Musgrove among them.
**Yankees at Angels (9:38 p.m. ET, Angel Stadium).** New York was quoted near minus 138 with Los Angeles around plus 118, total 8.5. The listed pitching is the interesting part: Elmer Rodriguez (reportedly 0-2, 4.70 ERA) for New York against Walbert Urena (reportedly 8-9, 2.94). The market is favoring the road team through the worse listed starter line, which usually means it is pricing lineups and bullpens rather than the arms. Both are probables.
**Phillies at Diamondbacks (9:40 p.m. ET, Chase Field).** The closest thing to a pick 'em on the slate, quoted near minus 118 for Philadelphia (77-60) and around even money for Arizona (73-65), with Aaron Nola and Brandon Pfaadt the reported starters. Arizona is chasing San Diego for the last National League wild card berth, so the stakes are real even if the price is flat.
Elsewhere: Tampa Bay (81-54, leading the American League East) near minus 162 against the Mets, Atlanta near minus 154 against San Francisco, Minnesota near minus 135 against Detroit, Houston near minus 131 against the White Sox. Baltimore visits Colorado with Tanner Gordon (listed 1-4, 5.38 ERA) the reported Rockies starter and the Baltimore side undetermined.
What could go wrong
The largest risk today is a reader treating the market ranking above as the model's. It is not, and the two routinely disagree, which is why this column normally publishes both. Nearly every starter named here is a probable rather than announced, and one game lists no visiting starter at all, so a late scratch is the likeliest way a morning read goes stale. Monday follows a full Sunday slate, so bullpen availability is uneven and hard to see from outside. Coors carries its usual warning on the total rather than the side, and Wrigley adds wind direction, which moves a total more than a winner.
Responsible play
**This is model output, not betting advice.** Verdexed publishes its model's probabilities and edges for informational and entertainment purposes only. Nothing here is a recommendation to place a wager, and no outcome is guaranteed, even the model's highest-confidence picks lose regularly.
**You must be 21+** (or the legal age in your jurisdiction) and located where sports wagering is legal to bet. Sports betting is not available everywhere; know and follow the laws where you are. Never bet more than you can afford to lose, and never chase losses.
