MLB Today's Best Bets (August 16): Skubal Headlines a First-Place Sunday

By Verdexed Analytics

Sunday's board runs through Chavez Ravine, where first place in the National League is genuinely live: Milwaukee (75-48) and Los Angeles (74-49) close a four-game series at 4:10 p.m. ET with one game separating them. The Dodgers have Tarik Skubal listed, the reigning two-time American League Cy Young winner they acquired from Detroit at the deadline, against Milwaukee's Logan Henderson, who threw five shutout innings against this same club in May. The honest headline from this desk is the one it has filed for several days running: Verdexed's per-game win probabilities and market gaps were not retrievable at publication, so no edge is claimed below and no confidence tier is assigned. That is a data availability limit on this column, not a verdict on the model or on the slate. What follows is the market's read alone, and the firmest price sourced today belongs to the Mets, near -168 at home against Washington. This is model output framing, published for information and entertainment only, not betting advice, and it assumes a reader 21 or older located where sports wagering is legal.

How to read this

These columns normally carry two numbers side by side: the model's probability for a game, and the gap between that number and the vig-free probability implied by the market. Verdexed's published methodology describes a point-in-time approach, computing features that describe both teams (recent form, team strength and scoring differentials, home-field advantage, head-to-head history, rest, and in baseball the starting pitcher and bullpen) and feeding them through a model fit on thousands of past games, using only information that existed before first pitch. That last constraint is the guard against lookahead leakage. The site also states its own conservative position on edges directly: betting markets are efficient, a consistent large edge over the closing line is rare, and it prefers to show a small honest edge rather than a fabricated large one. Two limits apply again today. Trailing 30-day accuracy and Brier figures were not retrievable, so no recent hit rate is claimed here, and no per-game probabilities were retrievable, so nothing below is called an edge. Where a probability appears below, it is the market's own number, taken from two-sided prices with the house margin stripped out, and labeled as such. No edge is a guarantee in any case, and the model's highest-confidence sides lose regularly.

The model's top edges today

There are none to publish. An edge requires a model probability and a market probability observed at the same moment, and only the market half of that pair is available today. Inventing the other half would be worse than saying so. What follows is where the market has placed its conviction. Every pitcher named is a listed probable, not a confirmed starter.

**Milwaukee at Los Angeles, 4:10 p.m. ET.** The marquee game and the one with the most standing at stake. Henderson (6-2, 2.88 ERA, 69 strikeouts in 56.1 innings) is listed against Skubal (2.93 ERA, 128 strikeouts in 107.2 innings), who has allowed five runs over 11 innings in his two starts since the trade. Los Angeles sent Zyhir Hope, River Ryan and Brady Smith to Detroit for him. No Sunday price was confirmable for this game at publication, so none is asserted. The series has already shown the market does not treat Dodger Stadium as the automatic tiebreaker it once did against this Milwaukee club.

**Washington at New York, 1:40 p.m. ET, Citi Field.** Jake Irvin (2-6, 5.79 ERA) is listed against Christian Scott (3-3, 3.45 ERA), with the Mets near -168 and the Nationals at +156 on a total of 8.5. Stripping the margin from that pair puts the market around 62 percent on New York, the firmest number sourced for this slate and the widest starting-pitcher ERA gap on it.

**Boston at Pittsburgh, 1:35 p.m. ET.** Patrick Sandoval (1-1, 3.30 ERA) is listed against Paul Skenes, whose sourced line this season (9-11, 3.88 ERA) sits well off his earlier standard. The price reflects the ambivalence: Pittsburgh near -118 with Boston at -102, about 52 percent on the home side once devigged, which is close to no opinion at all.

**New York at Toronto, 1:37 p.m. ET.** Ryan Weathers (5-7, 3.69 ERA, 136 strikeouts) is listed for the Yankees against Dylan Cease (7-5, 2.40 ERA, 191 strikeouts), the best strikeout arm listed anywhere on today's board. No Sunday price was confirmable here, so none is asserted.

**Chicago at Detroit, 1:40 p.m. ET.** Sean Burke (7-6, 2.99 ERA) is listed for the White Sox against Drew Anderson (4-4, 3.91 ERA), with both sides quoted at -108. That is a true pick'em once the margin comes out, meaning the market is declining to separate them.

**Miami at Cincinnati.** The Marlins were quoted near -118 as the road favorite. Neither starter was confirmable at publication, which matters more than the price does: a getaway-day listing that has not been posted by the club is the least settled thing on any Sunday board.

What could go wrong

The recurring Sunday risk is on full display here. Every pitcher above is a listed probable, and the Miami and Cincinnati game shows what happens when even that is missing. Sunday is also a getaway day, so regulars sit, and the lineup priced at breakfast is frequently not the one posted at first pitch. Bullpens are the other variable no listed matchup captures: this board follows a full Saturday slate, and arms used late Saturday are unavailable or short today. Skubal carries a specific version of that risk, two starts into a new organization with a postseason race to manage, where workload decisions can be made for October rather than for Sunday. The absence of model output here remains a limitation worth naming plainly: readers who want the probabilities and confidence tiers these articles normally lead with should go to the Verdexed prediction and edge pages directly.

Responsible play

**This is model output, not betting advice.** Verdexed publishes its model's probabilities and edges for informational and entertainment purposes only. Nothing here is a recommendation to place a wager, and no outcome is guaranteed, even the model's highest-confidence picks lose regularly.

**You must be 21+** (or the legal age in your jurisdiction) and located where sports wagering is legal to bet. Sports betting is not available everywhere; know and follow the laws where you are. Never bet more than you can afford to lose, and never chase losses.
