MLB Today's Best Bets (July 29): Schlittler Is the Chalk, the Dodgers' Price Is the Gap

By Verdexed Analytics

The Verdexed model's firmest read on a 15-game Wednesday board sits on the South Side, where Cam Schlittler starts for New York carrying a 10-6 record and an American League-leading 2.07 ERA while the Yankees have been listed only around -147. This is model output, not betting advice, written for readers 21 or older located where sports wagering is legal. The single widest gap between price and confirmable inputs sits three time zones west: Los Angeles has been reported near -270 against Seattle, a number implying roughly a 73 percent win probability, while at least one public model published for the same game landed near 53 percent. That is the largest disagreement on today's board, and it carries a starter caveat spelled out below.

How to read this

These are the model's leans and its gaps against market consensus, published for information rather than as recommendations. Verdexed's stated method runs weighted per-game features (team strength, recent form, park, rest, home field, starter and bullpen) through simulation, logs every prediction before first pitch, and scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score, a calibration measure where lower is better. It defines an edge as the distance between the model's own probability and the market's de-vigged implied probability. Two disclosures belong here rather than buried. The model's trailing 30-day hit rate and Brier figure were not retrievable at the time of writing, so no accuracy number is quoted rather than an approximate one being invented. The published per-game win probabilities were likewise unavailable this morning, so the leans below are directional, with no invented percentages or edge figures. Carry the calibration point into every read: a well-calibrated 60 percent side still loses 40 percent of the time, and that is the math working normally, not the model breaking.

The model's top edges today

**Yankees at White Sox (Schlittler vs Martin, 7:40 PM ET).** The firmest side on the board, and the reason is one arm. Schlittler has thrown 130 1/3 innings across 22 starts with 157 strikeouts against 25 walks and a 0.93 WHIP, numbers that describe a full season rather than a hot month. Chicago counters with Davis Martin at 9-5 with a 3.49 ERA, respectable but a run and a half behind. The reported price has New York near -147 with Chicago around +123 and a total of 7.5. A league-leading ERA attached to a number that modest is where the model's independent probability tends to outrun the market's. The honest counterweight: run support is not a pitcher's to control, and a 7.5 total means one swing decides it.

**Mariners at Dodgers (Hancock vs Wrobleski projected, 10:10 PM ET).** The widest gap, and the least settled. Reporting on the Los Angeles starter conflicts, with sources listing Justin Wrobleski and others pointing to a different arm, so treat this as projected rather than confirmed. That matters, because the market number reported near -270 is heavy enough that the identity of the starter should move it. Los Angeles is also carrying real attrition, with Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Will Smith among the names on the 60-day injured list per the public injury feed, and Shohei Ohtani reportedly set to miss his next pitching start with a knee issue. Against that backdrop, a 73 percent implied number is a lot to ask, and the divergence from a public model near 53 percent is the day's loudest signal that price and roster are telling different stories. Confirm the starter before treating any of it as settled.

**Brewers at Giants (Drohan vs Webb, 3:45 PM ET).** A coin flip priced like it is not. Milwaukee has been listed near -154 with San Francisco around +130 behind Logan Webb (5-7, 3.98 ERA), opposite Shane Drohan (5-4, 3.51 ERA). Webb's record understates him, and numberFire's published projection landed at 50.8 percent for the Giants, essentially a pick'em against a road side laying a real number. The model's lean is toward the home underdog on price rather than on any claim that San Francisco is the better team.

**Braves at Mets (Holmes vs Manaea, 1:10 PM ET).** The board's cleanest case of records and run projections disagreeing. Atlanta enters at 62-44 against a New York club listed at 45-62, a 17-game gap in the standings, yet a public run-differential model for this game landed near even, giving the Mets a marginal edge on the projected score. Grant Holmes faces Sean Manaea in an early game at Citi Field. When the standings and the game-level projection split that far apart, the model's read is that the true number sits closer to the projection, which argues against paying a heavy price on Atlanta rather than arguing for New York outright.

**Cubs at Cardinals (Boyd vs May, 7:45 PM ET).** Chicago sits at 60-46 and St. Louis at 53-53, but Dustin May (5-6, 4.30 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) at home against Matthew Boyd projects close to even, with a public model landing near 52 percent for the Cardinals. This is where the model's value shows up as restraint: no side here carries a gap wide enough to headline, and saying so is the finding.

What could go wrong

The starter question is the day's biggest live risk. The Los Angeles probable is disputed in public reporting, Miami is expected to use Ryan Gusto as an opener against Philadelphia, and a projected starter is not a confirmed one until the club posts it. A late scratch flips the read on any of these games, most sharply on the Dodgers number, where the entire disagreement rests on who takes the ball. Beyond that, Wednesday is a getaway day across much of the slate, meaning shortened leashes and bullpen arms working their third day in four, the least predictable input in any baseball model. The early starts also front-load the board, so weather and lineup news land with little runway.
