MLB Today's Best Bets (July 26): Misiorowski Is the Chalk, Cleveland Is the Value
By Verdexed Analytics
The Verdexed model's firmest read on a full Sunday slate is Milwaukee at home against Colorado, where Jacob Misiorowski (10-4, 1.57 ERA) is the listed starter opposite Kyle Freeland (2-9, 7.28 ERA) at 2:10 PM ET at American Family Field. This is model output, not betting advice, written for readers 21 or older located where sports wagering is legal. The more useful headline sits elsewhere. The day's biggest apparent gap between price and projection is in Tampa Bay, where Cleveland is a road underdog near +113 despite sending out the better season ERA of the two listed starters. The firmest side and the biggest edge are rarely the same game, and today they are not.
How to read this
These are the model's leans and its edges against the market consensus, offered for information rather than as recommendations. Verdexed logs every prediction before first pitch, scores it afterward on win accuracy and Brier score (a standard calibration measure where lower is better), and publishes the running record so readers can judge it on results rather than claims. Its stated methodology blends the model's own probability with the de-vigged probability implied by current moneylines, so a 65 percent prediction should land roughly 65 percent of the time across a large sample. Two disclosures belong here. The specific 30-day hit rate and Brier figure were not retrievable at the time of writing, so no accuracy number is quoted rather than an approximate one being invented. The published per-game win probabilities were likewise not retrievable this morning, so the leans below are directional only, built from the same inputs the model reads (team strength, listed starter quality, park, home field) with no invented percentages or edge figures. Carry the calibration point into every read: a well-calibrated 60 percent side still loses 40 percent of the time, and that is the math working normally, not the model breaking.
The model's top edges today
**Guardians at Rays (Messick vs Rasmussen, 12:15 PM ET).** This is the clearest price-versus-projection gap on the board. Tampa Bay is roughly a -136 favorite with Cleveland near +113 and the total around seven runs at DraftKings, yet the pitching matchup leans the other way: Parker Messick has been Cleveland's de facto ace with a 2.68 ERA through 20 starts, against Drew Rasmussen at 8-5 with a 3.28 ERA and 103 strikeouts. Home field and roster depth explain why Tampa Bay is favored, but the better arm is on the underdog side, which is the shape of a real edge rather than a manufactured one. One caveat: Rays infielder Taylor Walls sat out Friday's game against Cleveland with a finger issue, unconfirmed either way for today.
**Cubs at Pirates (Ashcraft vs Taillon, 1:35 PM ET).** Pittsburgh sits near -126 with Chicago around +105 and the total near nine, and the underlying numbers argue the home side should be priced more firmly than that. Braxton Ashcraft is 9-4 with a 3.95 ERA and a 3.53 FIP, while Jameson Taillon is 2-5 with a 5.38 ERA and a 6.39 FIP. A FIP gap approaching three runs is unusually wide for a game trading this close to even. Note that Pittsburgh placed Flores on the 7-day concussion injured list Friday, which thins the lineup behind the pitching advantage.
**Rockies at Brewers (Misiorowski vs Freeland, 2:10 PM ET).** The highest-confidence side, and the one with the least value attached to it. Milwaukee is 64-39 against Colorado's 42-63, and the splits are one-sided: Misiorowski has allowed 11 earned runs across 66.1 innings in 11 home starts, while Freeland has allowed 42 earned runs in 45.2 innings across nine road starts. The total has been posted around 7.5. The exact moneyline was not confirmable at this writing, but Milwaukee is a heavy favorite by any reading, and that is the problem. Confidence in a side and value on a price are separate things, and the consensus has almost certainly absorbed what the projection sees.
**Royals at Tigers (Valdez vs Avila, 1:40 PM ET, Comerica Park).** This is the spot where the market looks more likely to be ahead of the model than behind it. Detroit has been listed near -190, a price implying roughly 65 percent before vig, for a team sitting at 50-55. Framber Valdez is 5-7 with a 4.57 ERA opposite Luinder Avila at 5-3 and 4.86, which is a narrow starter edge, not a commanding one, and Kansas City is 7-3 in Avila's ten starts as a moneyline underdog. The side is defensible; the number is not.
**Blue Jays at Red Sox (Gausman vs Suarez, 1:35 PM ET, Fenway Park).** Boston is around -136 with Toronto near +116, and here the market and the inputs agree. Ranger Suarez is 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA for Boston, while Kevin Gausman is 4-9 with a 4.51 season ERA and, more relevantly, a 7.85 ERA with a 2.02 WHIP across his past six starts. A game priced about right is not an edge, and saying so beats dressing it up.
What could go wrong
The largest risk today is the one that recurs every morning: a projected starter is not a confirmed starter. Every arm above came from public probables rather than a club announcement in hand, and a late scratch invalidates the read that depended on it, most sharply in Milwaukee, where the whole confidence case rests on one pitcher. The injury notes above are Friday-dated and unconfirmed for today's lineups, so treat them as directional. These are also series finales, when bullpen usage from the prior two days does the most damage to close games, and the Cleveland and Pittsburgh reads are both close games. Detroit near -190 is a real price where one bad Valdez inning erases a day of small edges. Weather can move a total either direction, so any lean on a number is conditional on the forecast at first pitch.
