Yesterday's picks: how the model did (September 19)

Verdexed's graded line for Saturday, September 19, is zero picks, zero correct, zero incorrect. Baseball played a full board and the NHL opened its preseason, and not one game was scored by this desk, because the model's per-game probabilities were not published. That is the forty-fourth consecutive slate opening with the same number, and it is a bad result rather than a neutral one.

The scorecard

Picks made: zero. Correct: zero. Incorrect: zero. Accuracy on the day is undefined, because the denominator is zero.

**MLB.** A full Saturday board, played and settled. Verdexed's own best bets column for September 19 stated at the top that per-game win probabilities, confidence tiers and edge figures were not retrievable at publication, that there was no biggest edge to name, and that no probability it printed was the model's. It called that a fifth consecutive publishing day without a model board. There is nothing in it to grade as a pick.

**NHL.** The 2026-27 preseason opened Saturday with five games. No board was published, and preseason hockey does not enter this ledger in any case. **NFL and NBA.** No games.

No accuracy percentage and no Brier score is cited here. The verdexed.com prediction, edge and accuracy pages remain blocked by the network egress proxy this column is written behind, and a public search returns the published methodology rather than the ledger underneath it. That describes a process, not a number this column could read. The 65 percent and 70 percent confidence bands went unpopulated for a forty-fourth straight day.

The hand-kept ledger of stated sides holds at 13-10 across 23 decisions, unchanged since Sunday.

What can be graded is the market half the column printed. Of the four games it broke down, two carried a quoted price. Both held.

Best call / worst miss

Nothing was picked, so there is no sharpest call and no worst miss. What follows grades the quoted prices instead.

**The prices that held.** The column quoted Milwaukee near minus 132 at Camden Yards and the Mets near minus 120 against Philadelphia, the second worth roughly 52 percent once the sportsbook's margin comes out.

Result in Baltimore: **Brewers 1, Orioles 0**. Robert Gasser allowed three hits over seven innings, Joey Ortiz reached third when Rece Hinds lost a sinking line drive in the sun, and Gary Sanchez chopped him home in the second for the only run of the afternoon. Trevor Rogers struck out 10 over eight innings for Baltimore and lost, with the Orioles finishing 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. It was Milwaukee's 97th win, tying the franchise record. The reported total of 8.5, with the under near minus 132, also landed, by seven and a half runs.

Result at Citi Field: **Mets 10, Phillies 3**. The column's stated reason for a sub-.500 home team being priced ahead was the projected pitching gap, Christian Scott against Andrew Painter, and that is roughly how the game broke. Francisco Alvarez's three-run homer off Painter in the fifth put New York ahead for good, and Carson Benge added three hits and his 19th homer, passing Pete Alonso's Mets rookie record for hits in a season.

**The worst read: the right warning aimed at the wrong game.** The column's stated largest risk was that every pitcher it named was projected rather than confirmed, and it singled out the Phillies game as the likeliest to break, because Philadelphia was reported to be weighing another bullpen game. Painter started as listed. The projection that actually broke was Boston's. The column listed Payton Tolle for the Red Sox at Tropicana Field; Brayan Bello started instead and tied a career high with 11 strikeouts over eight innings of one-run ball. Boston lost anyway, **Rays 2, Red Sox 1**, on a two-out Richie Palacios single in the ninth off Garrett Whitlock. The second break came in Arlington, where Cal Quantrill left after one and a third innings with right lat tightness and Texas won **6-2** behind three and two-thirds hitless innings from Jordan Montgomery.

Neither of those games carried a quoted price, so neither is a graded loss. They are a reminder that the caveat was correct in substance and pointed at the wrong target.

What it means

Two quoted prices holding is not a result worth celebrating. Both were modest home favorites, and prices in that range are built to land a little more than half the time. A day where both come in is noise, and a day where both lose would have been noise too.

The number that matters is still the zero. Forty-four consecutive slates have opened with no graded pick, which is a publishing failure rather than a modeling result, and it cannot be dressed up as one. A platform that grades itself in public has to have something to grade.

The stated-sides ledger stays 13-10 across 23 decisions. At that sample the gap between 13-10 and 10-13 is a few coin flips, and quoting it as evidence of anything would be dishonest. There is no trailing thirty-day accuracy figure to anchor to here, and readers should not infer one.

Responsible play

**This is a record of past model output, not betting advice.** Verdexed grades its model in public for transparency and entertainment. Past results do not predict future outcomes, nothing here is a recommendation to place a wager, and no pick is ever a guarantee, even a strong model loses regularly.
